today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt romney just said. he does not believe abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. okay. then in september, here was mitt romney telling david gregory on "meet the press" that he's not going to repeal all of obama care. he says he will keep part of obama care. but the par

paul ryan embracing the across the board tax cut mitt romney is running on. he was pressed by martha, who did an excellent job exactly specifically you do to pay for that tax cut, totally evaded that. what happened was as happened on other issues, joe biden got frustrated. you saw biden, he variously was laughing, smiling, got angry at times. i think there were times at which that demeanor did not serve him well. ryan did not get flustered. did have some republican political strategists who i talked to during the debate thought ryan looked a little bit smug at times. ryan, of course, is young, he has to worry about looking like the junior varsity against the older guy. bottom line, i don't think anybody dominated the debate but i thought ryan did well and i think basically what we've done is set the table for the debate next week with obama and romney. that is going to determine what the next pivot in this race is. >> john, just to bring up a couple of points. we did have an informal poll on cnbc, about 3,000 people wrote in, based on what they have been writing, it went 60% in favor

ryan is to try, us a mention, to accelerate the momentum that romney gained last week and try to prevent joe biden from coming out very aggressively and saying, hey, wait a minute. president obama may not have said it, but i'm going to say it tonight. there are contradictions between the romney who was on stage in denver, the romney record. joe biden is an experienced debater. he sometimes makes mistakes verbally. we'll see how he handles that, and paul ryan is young. there's a very large age gap between these two, but he is somebody who is very fluent in policy, as you know. an intellectual leader of the party. i expect he'll be able to hold his own, but we'll have to see exactly how tough these two candidates get with one another while keeping in mind that their job is to focus on the top of the other guy's ticket. ryan on obama and joe biden on mitt romney. >> you are so right, john. that's the key. the tops of the tickets that will really matter at the end of the day or the end of the evening. thanks, john. we'll see you later on in the show and tonight's vice presidential

romney says he's pro-life but doesn't intend to do anything that's pro-life. ryan says he's pro-life and means it. he wants to dump roe v wade. he and his cohorts would proceed to ban it in every sate they could closing abortion rights down into as few states as possible. in this way they would make the banning of abortion a matter of geography. the more states they could get to pass a ban, the further a woman would have to travel to have one. presumably abortion would be safe and legal in coastal states like new york and california. live in the middle, however, and you'd have to leave not just your town and state but maybe the entire region to get to a state where your decision would be respected. this is ryan's plan for american women. but he doesn't stop there. he's also a co-sponsor of the personhood bill that would declare a fertilized human egg a person with all the 14th amendment requirements of life, liberty, and property as well. it would not just outlaw abortion, it would make it murder. joining me to absorb those facts are alex wagner and ron reagan, author and radio

romney and paul ryan have very, very extreme positions on women's reproductive rights, and to sort of book end or to just end -- give it like five to ten minutes in what is the only vice presidential debate i think was really shortchanging the issue. that said, if paul -- sorry, if joe biden drew blood last night, i thought it was on this issue in particular. this is not an issue of contraception coverage. these aren't nuanced positions on, you know, the catholic church and reproduction. this is fundamentally the question of whether women have the right to choose, and paul ryan could not answer the question, and to many, many women from both sides of the aisle, this is something that you vote on. i mean, this is not a subtle sort of tax policy nuance. this is about having the choice to have an abortion and the dialogue that goes on between a woman and her doctor. and it was clear that the romney/ryan ticket is in a place that the obama/biden ticket is not. >> well, you made a point that i like to make. we can argue about a lot of issues, as i said. there were a lot of issues debate
